Red Head Beach

It's Wednesday and we're all up at Aunt Mary's house now. She lives by Macquarie Lake, which is a lake that enters the ocean near Newcastle. Malcolm is feeling a little under the weather today so Nana is staying back at the house with him while the rest of us go to explore Red Head Beach, about 30 minute drive from Aunt Mary's. You may be interested to know that Aunt Mary actually lives in a little town called Toronto, a lot smaller than the one in Ontario.

Uncle Chris was kind enough to loan his car for dad to drive us around while here, so we loaded the cars with towels, sunscreen, boogie boards, and the rest of beach essentials. The weather was overcast on the way to the beach, but quickly cleared up shortly after arriving. Mum and Eamon learned a little lesson about sunscreen as they both came home with a little sunburn. The sun in Australia is very powerful so you have to make sure you have high uv sunscreen on. Even the primary and high school kids here must wear hats and have sunscreen on before being allowed outside.

As we starting walking down the path to the beach the kids all spotted a sign warning of snakes in the bush. After some reassurance from Aunt Mary we were all on our way again. At Redhead Beach the surf barrels in from the mighty Pacific Ocean. The boys, minus Malcolm, were pushed around by the incoming waves, so powerful that surfing competitions are held there. After battling the waves and heat for hours, we cooled ourselves down with delicious ice cream cones. The sunburn came later.

We saw lots of big cargo ships sitting out in the ocean waiting to go into Newcastle to pickup coal which Australia sends to China. It continues to be warm down here - about 28 C during the day. No Snow!
